A Roman Catholic priest who served as a parish priest at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, was arrested Wednesday, July 25th, 2012 and charged with eight misdemeanor counts, and one felony count, of sexual assault. His alleged victims are two women who claimed the priest sexually battered them, and a 17-year old girl who claims she had been inappropriately touched by the priest over a period of two years.
The priest, 67 year old Luis Jose Cuevas, has since been removed from the ministry and is currently being held in a Long Beach [CA] jail on $1 million dollar bail. He was originally arrested in Mexico on Monday, and returned to the U.S. to serve trial. Police suspect there may be other victims and are asking for anyone with additional information to come forth.
