Motorcyclist Hit by SUV and Killed in Newport Beach

|
A motorcycle and vehicle collided in Newport Beach on Friday.

The accident happened about 5:50 p.m. The male driver of a Toyota 4Runner which was northbound on Bristol St. collided with motorcyclist Darin Byrne, a 46-year-old Covina resident, near Campus Dr. The SUV rolled over and Byrne was trapped beneath it.

Byrne was transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the cause of the crash is still under investigation.

One of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents is when the driver of a vehicle doesn’t see the motorcyclist. Studies suggest that nearly 2/3’s of motorcycle accidents occur when the driver of a vehicle turns into the path of a motorcyclist, violating the motorcyclist’s right of way.
